School Friendly 5-Minute Honey Banana Sushi with Local Hive

September 18, 2019

Can we talk about bringing birthday treats to our kid’s school for a minute?

It’s a near artform to find the right balance in a school birthday treat won’t leave the kids bouncing off the wall while the teacher glances at your with narrowed eyes and will be ok for the peanut allergy / gluten sensitive pupils . . . but still also be fun enough to feel celebratory.

I am on the opposite end of the spectrum of the crafty cooking mom who can pop into the kitchen and whip up a low/free everything banned at school cake. But, what I lack in baking skills I make up for in strides with creativity. That’s why I’m sharing with you one of my kids favorite recipes, invented especially for school birthday celebrations, 5-Minute Honey Banana Sushi.

The way I aimlessly wander through the aisles of Target is a lot like how I spend my least gratifying days of motherhood. For better or for worse, I lose sight of my purpose and by afternoon settle on just doing better tomorrow.  Maybe there is a list but there is no plan and I already know that I’ll be in a battle with myself for presence.

As I set my purse in my cart and walk through the doors, I am resolved.  I’m just going to fill my cart with what I need.  I’m not going to be distracted.

CAPRI SUN Our Favorite Lunchbox Staple is Better than Ever

I find myself always falling victim to thinking I know exactly what the next stage of parenting will look and feel like, then I get completely surprised but how much I didn’t know or wasn’t prepared for.  In the transition to ‘mom of elementary schooler’ I was totally unprepared for packing lunches! I don’t have a 9-5 where I need to pack food for myself so my lunch packing game was definitely under par.  I quickly did what any mom would do and turned to a friend whose kids are a few years older than mine and tried to shorten my learning curve.

My girlfriend filled my virtual shopping cart with all the essentials to survive five days a week of lunch packing.  The right size lunch bag to fit a bento box and a drink, the right size coolers to let it still close and fit a drink.  When she grabbed a CAPRI SUN from her cupboard to show me that unlike juice boxes, it does fit; I was filled with all kinds of nostalgia.  I can’t remember a youth soccer game where we didn’t celebrate an under 6’s win with an orange slice and CAPRI SUN. An Excerpt From Motherhood

An-Excerpt-From-Motherhood

I recognize that look.  The furrowed brow, the constrained eyes with pupils narrowing towards the center into a cold stare.  It’s not her wearing the expression that I am familiar with, but the expression itself.

It’s like the pair of patent leather pumps she loves to pull out of my closet step into and play mommy. Just like her favorite pair of my shoes she is familiar with trying on, so is this expression.

I recognize that it belongs to me.  My face knows how to, involuntarily, turn that exasperated and cold in seconds.  I look down and realize that my sweet child isn’t misbehaving but is instead just playing mommy using the accessory she’s so familiar seeing me wear, frustration.

A Mother’s Day Gift Tradition You’ll Wish You Already Started

Let’s face it Mother’s Day gifting success can be overwhelming for anyone. But I know the stakes can feel particularly high for dads of young kids.  Newer moms who have more recently parted ways with their independent lives tend to be a little more vested in the outcome of their Mother’s Day.

I get it, I am right there with those moms.

But a few years ago, I had an idea for Mother’s Day that has completely shifted the course of how we celebrate and how I am able to enjoy my Mother’s Day gift day in and day out for years to come.
