B was a hard letter to settle on. Birkenstock, Box Pleat, but at the end of the day I really want to showcase a fashion trend that is highly wearable…enter the boyfriend jean. You know the scene in every romantic comedy where the leading lady wakes up at her crush’s house after a night in the sack and throws on his dress shirt and it looks amazing. That moment basically created menswear inspired fashion and boyfriend jeans are no exception.
Boyfriend jeans just like men come in many shapes and sizes. I like my men/husband built like a lumberjack so the idea of wearing his jeans is downright silly. But encompassing his look in an oversized worn in from manual labor looking pair of jeans does make for a total fashion moment. This fashion trend is a godsend for Mom’s and is perfect transition from getting out of those Lululemon groove pants and into something with a real waistband. The trick to pulling off this look comes down to 4 key elements.
4 Key Elements to Style Your Boyfriend Jeans
-
Fit:
This is crucial to pulling off boyfriend jeans. You want them to be loose but still form fitting enough to reveal some shape underneath them. Whether you are getting a pair from Old Navy or Neiman Marcus, pay particular attention to how it fits on your butt. You still want enough fit through your ass to not loose it’s shape completely.
-
Length:
Most women like their boyfriend jeans rolled so they hit above the ankle.
-
Shape:
You want the shape of your boyfriend jean to be wide. Almost like a perfect vertical line down from your hip. Depending on your body type or what’s in your closet you might be able to do a looser fit boot cut but generally you will find these stocked in a straight leg. If you have a tiny frame you can probably pull off lose fitting boyfriend jeans and a loose fitting top. If you are medium to full figured pairing a loose fitting boyfriend jean with a tighter fitting tank/shirt under a jacket or cardigan will balance the proportions well.
-
Styling:
Boyfriend jeans are generally distressed, well very distressed. As a result they skew casual which you can either embrace with white converse and a raglan or boots or contrast by dressing up with a chic flat and great statement necklace or a textured jacket. The busier style of the boyfriend jean is complimented well with solid color tee’s, blouses and button down
-
Dressing Them up for the Right Occasion:
There are a million different ways to wear the boyfriend jean so just be sure that your look is the right one for the right occasion.
- The Cuff – Boyfriend jeans require a good rolled up cuff. Why, because your boyfriend is, for all intensive purposes, taller than you. Just fold the bottom up 1 inch and then fold again pulling the sides taut and you have the perfect cuff everytime.
If you haven’t tried a boyfriend jean it’s definitely a trend you don’t want to miss. Try the trend by starting at Madwell, Zara, or Asos. I went through a couple cheap pairs from Old Navy and Forever21 before I landed on my perfect pair. Also, I found my second favorite pair already sitting in my closet in the form of a retired pair of Paige jeans that I made under with some at home distressing.
